Purpose The purpose of the Scholarship Program is to provide support for scholarship in two ways: 1. Financial assistance to individuals in accredited academic programs (Academic Scholarship Awards); 2. Financial assistance to individuals for research and writing about Durand family history or about events significant to Durand family history (Research Awards)
Program Background The Scholarship Program was established with memorial gifts and donations received by the family of John Adelard Durand after his untimely death in 2002 at age 37. Occasional contributions and proceeds from an annual fund-raising bike ride called JohnnyRide have increased the Scholarship Program fund since that time. With advice from the Durand Heritage Foundation board of directors, John’s family established the purpose, administration, eligibility requirements, and application procedures for the Scholarship Program. At present three members of John’s family serve as the Scholarship Program Committee to process applications for Awards.
Gifts and Bequests Gifts and bequests to the Scholarship Program are tax-deductible to the extent allowable. Cash donations to the Scholarship Program can be sent at any time to Treasurer, Durand Heritage Foundation, 1501 Rushmore Drive, Burnsville, MN 55306. Inquiries concerning bequests should also be directed to the Treasurer.
Administration Each year the Scholarship Program is authorized to make several Academic Scholarship Awards. Research Awards are available as funds permit. Academic Scholarship Awards are announced annually on May 8 (John Adelard Durand’s birthday) by the Scholarship Program Committee. Research Awards may be made at any time. The treasurer of the Durand Heritage Foundation manages Scholarship Program funds in an account separate from Foundation funds. The number and amount of Awards will increase as the Scholarship Program fund grows through continued fund-raising, cash donations, gifts, and bequests.
Eligibility Awards are made without regard to race, creed, color, gender or family relationship. Preference is given to applicants who have not received an Academic Scholarship Award or Research Award. Membership in the Durand Heritage Foundation is not required.
